Summary

Bode created a new constellation, Herschels Teleskop, near Auriga, to honor William Herschel’s discovery of Uranus in 1781. This Bode-Fortin-Flamsteed atlas is a 1782 German edition of Fortin’s 1776 reprinting of Flamsteed’s 1729 atlas. Bode included additional stars compared to the Fortin French edition of 1776. In 1801, Bode would publish his stunning, large format Uranographia, with its own distinctive constellation figures, the last of the early modern star atlases which fused art with up-to-date scientific observation. This 1801 atlas will be on display at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, Spring 2016.
