Summary

These two original microscopes by Culpeper are similar to the designs of Campani, Hooke and Adams. They were crafted by the English instrument-maker Edmond Culpeper, whose microscopes were popular in homes and educational settings through the 18th century.

To focus a Culpeper microscope, one may slide the inner microscope tube up and down within the outer supporting tube. Two brass tripods secure the microscope to the stage, and the stage to the wooden base with its mirror for lighting.

One measures 40 cm and the other 30 cm in height. Instrument makers like Culpeper and Adams provided a standard assortment of accessories, including ivory specimen slips.
