The foundational work for modern dentistry, including tooth transplants: Hunter established a new system of nomenclature for teeth and studied the development of teeth from birth. That tooth transplants were successfully performed in Victorian Britain is due to the experiments behind this book, a foundational work of modern dentistry. After serving as a surgeon in the British army, Hunter went on to a career in London as one of Britain’s leading scientists, a member of the Royal Society of London, surgeon to King George III, and Surgeon General under William Pitt. His teaching collection of 14,000 preparations of over 500 species of plants and animals led to the creation of the Hunterian Museum of the Royal Society of Surgeons in London.
