Charles L’Ecluse, or Clusius, created the Hortus Academicus garden at the University of Leiden where he was a professor. His works reported the latest discoveries in natural history from Alpine regions in Europe and from Spanish territories around the world. Clusius sought information from Hernandez to include among his many sources, and expressed hope that the Lynx would be able to publish their edition quickly. The elaborate engravings of Clusius’ works were made possible by his collaboration with the Plantin printing press in Antwerp, which also published works by Nieremberg (see next item). Clusius also made pioneering studies of tulip horticulture. During the tulip mania of the 1630’s, a single tulip bulb might sell for as much as a tradesman’s annual wages.
