Summary

This page reflects Wegener’s interest in temperature fluctuations and patterns of glaciation. The theory of continental drift developed from Wegener’s researches in Greenland as a meteorologist with an interest in polar climate. The interdisciplinary character of the theory required a synthetic grasp of multiple lines of evidence from meteorology, geophysics, oceanography, geomagnetism, geography, paleobotany and other fields. Consequently, the theory encountered considerable controversy until new methods of cross-disciplinary collaboration could be established.
