Alternate Title(s): Phytographia curiosa
Author: Abraham Munting
Publication Location: Amsterdam
Year: 1702
Summary

Munting’s natural history drew upon two editions of Hernandez, both the Lynx edition published in Rome in 1651 and an earlier printing in Mexico City (1615), known as the Quatro Libros. When Francisco Hernandez returned from Mexico to Spain in 1577, he prepared a Latin manuscript for King Philip of Spain. This royal manuscript was the basis for the Lynx edition (Rome, 1651). Historically, this was the most important edition. The OU copy consists of a 1628 draft printing of this edition, supplemented with pages printed in 1651. A manuscript was translated into Spanish and published in Mexico City as Quatros Libros (1615), edited by Francisco Ximenez. This edition had no illustrations. Other manuscript drafts, in Hernandez’ possession at the time of his death, then circulated privately. Many found their way to the Biblioteca Nacional, in Madrid, and were published in a collected Opera (”Works”) in 1790.
