This book is Schall’s account of the Jesuit mission in China after Ricci. Working closely with Chinese collaborators, Schall oversaw the publication of more than 30 scientific works in Chinese which drew upon Galileo, Copernicus, Tycho, Kepler and John Napier. Books included the first description of the telescope written in Chinese, which Schall presented to the emperor along with a working Galileian telescope, and a book containing the first mention of the name of Galileo in Chinese. The portrait of Schall (from Kircher, 1667) shows him in his official dress as a mandarin of the first rank.
