Summary
Niccolò Tartaglia argued for the use of mathematics in physics, engineering and art. Tartaglia’s frontispiece shows Euclid guarding the gate of knowledge. Just inside, Perspectiva stands among the sciences that open the way to Philosophia. Tartaglia was a teacher of Ostilio Ricci, court mathematician of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Ricci in turn taught the young Galileo in Florence. Ricci also served as an instructor at the Academy of Drawing (Accademia del Disegno).
